Happy Birthday, Dad!

My Dad's birthday was this past Wednesday. I yelled at...ahem....encouraged the kids to get their schoolwork done in a timely fashion so that we could take a drive down to my parents' house and say Happy Birthday to Grandpa and give him all the presents we'd gotten him. Ok, so we hadn't really gotten him presents, but the kids put together a few things and Ruth made him a card. Byron gave him a hug and a birthday greeting, Grace gave him her favorite magnet that Ruth made her and David gave him a rock from his rock collection. This is a big deal. This wasn't just any old rock, but Manitoulin Camp Site #42 Rock (that's it's name-David names all his rocks. I bet you'd never guess what Poop Rock looks like...). I was so touched that David parted with this rock that he brought all the way home from Canada. He was especially fond of it because it was so smooth.

Ruth's card was a crack up, too. "Today you are 67..." she wrote. Nothing like throwing the exact age up there. It's just all the funnier because it's not like it's a milestone year or anything. Nobody goes all out for #67. Maybe they should-maybe Ruth's onto something here. ;)

So, we visit for a little bit and then I tell the kids it's time to head home. I have to finish dinner and we have class on Wednesday nights. They were all disappointed, but none more than Byron. "But, I thought we were going to stay for Grandpa's birthday!?", he said. And, that's when I realized-he thought we were having cake and ice cream and was bitterly disappointed when it became known that this was a birthday in name only.

Technically, Byron is correct. Not really a birthday without cake and ice cream. Not sure how you missed that.
I'm a little hurt I do not have a named rock in my collection of souveniers.
Glad it will not take months to rescue anyone from the bounce house.
