Who Owns the Sun

Two weeks ago we "rowed" Who Owns the Sun, by Stacy Chbosky. It was a book about a young boy who asks his father who owns the sun, wind, stars, etc and he always gets the answer that no one owns them. They are for everyone. In the end of the book, the boy comes to find that he is owned, as well as his father as they are Civil War era slaves. It was a pretty sad book and well thought out-and written by a 14yr old girl. So, we learned about slavery and the underground railroad, the sun, the food pyramid and what we eat, as well as simple machines like levers, Abraham Lincoln, and Harriet Tubman. It was quite a full week and we read several other books, including a short biography on Harriet Tubman as well as a book about the Amistad slave ship.
