K Art Class-A Two Week Span

I had my K group do a project that ended up spanning two weeks. The first week, we talked about Monet and his waterlily paintings. We talked about the colors he used to create the water in his waterlily paintings and then I attempted to teach the kids to use the watercolors to create their own water. I only allowed them to use blue and purple and any combination of those two. I tried to show them how to put paint on the pages and then use the water to blend and thin it out. It took a while, but they did start to understand it after a while.

The second week (this week) we worked on making waterlilies for our paintings. I showed the kids the Monet paintings again and we talked about them briefly. Then, I showed them a photograph of a water lily and we talked about the different colors and shapes that it had. Next, I gave the kids some supplies and they drew out the leaves and petals and cut them out. Finally we assembled our flowers.

Grace opted to trace my example leaf and cut it out.

Grace working on her water lily. After gluing down her leaves, she began to apply the petals of the flower. She glued down the edge and then bent it up a bit. I helped her arrange them a bit in a circular shape after this-she got a little wild and crazy.

The final step was to insert the yellow center. This is the finished project.

A view from the side-the waterlily is sort of three dimensional against the watercolor backdrop.
