Katy and the Big Snow

Last week's FIAR book was Katy and the Big Snow, by Virginia Lee Burton. The book was about Katy, a tractor, that worked for the road department. In the summer, she helped with making the roads and in the winter, she helped with clearing the snow. When the big snow came, Katy was the only one who could clear out the city of Geoppolis so that life could return to normal and she never stopped until she was done. Burton also wrote Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel which we read earlier. So, we compared the two books in both story and illustrations as Burton has a distinctive style in her drawings. We talked about the weather and kept track of our weather for the week. In the book, at one part, it states that the snow was five feet deep. So, I gave each girl a string that was five feet long and marked at each foot with a piece of tape. Then, they went about the house measuring things to see if they would be under the snow or not.
