Working Weekend
Chris and I managed to accomplish quite a bit this weekend. On Saturday, my parents came up to bring us a dresser for the girls. They were downsizing and we were blessed with a new used dresser that belonged to my mom back in the day. Dad and Chris took it up to the girls' room where it is sitting, waiting a bit of paint and some new hardware. The girls are very excited about it. Of course, why not? It's so much larger than their old one! David will then get the girls' dresser which is considerably larger than his small chest of drawers. That chest will fit perfectly in David's closer where it will house the linens for the kids' beds. A really great arrangement. While Mom entertained the girls, Chris and Dad (along with a little help from David) worked on fixing the log on the front of our house. There had been bug damage long ago and the previous owner had filled the hole with some foam. Well, that foam was breaking down (and it had a little help from the kids who just couldn't resist picking...). So, Chris and Dad cleaned out the hole, applied new stuff (isn't that technical??) and today Chris sealed over it with some stucco fixer stuff (again, so very technical).
I took the kids out yesterday and today for a bit of romping in the yard. It was beautiful and warm out so we had to take advantage of it. While they played, I began work on the lilies. We have a wonderful growth of lilies in our yard. Again, the previous owner let it go and the lilies were full of weeds and things. Last fall, I told Chris to just mow it all over. With this warm weather, the lilies were beginning to send up shoots. And, the grass was, too. So, I spent about 5hours total weeding and pulling out grass around the lilies. I have the largest spot weeded and I began to edge it. I still have to finish edging and then weed out the smaller patch which I will actually join to the larger patch and possibly transplant some of the smaller lilies. There are tons of new ones popping up and I seem to remember (?) that you're supposed to thin those things out periodically. So, in the process of thinning, I'm going to give a shot to transplanting them into the area between the two beds to expand things. My body aches tonight, but I am eager to get to work on it again tomorrow. Now that the kids are older, I can get some time outside for things like this. I also need to clean up the front yard (our pine trees drop so much garbage during the winter) and I need to weed out the flower bed under our pine tree. But, all in good time. If I can round up enough bricks, I may just edge that bed as well.
Mom and Dad also brought me some shelves that they had no use for. They are a great addition to our schoolroom. I was in need of more room for books. These shelves were just the ticket. I still have one sitting empty, though and the room needs to be organized, so never fear-that shelf will be filled soon enough. I just have to make some time between weed pulling.
