The Big Paint

This week, I got it in my head, that I'd really like to paint the girls' bedroom. I've been wanting to paint it for a really long time. Well, since we bought the house, actually. I have never cared for the color scheme in our house. Just to digress a little, the house was featured in a magazine quite some years ago. The owners had done quite a bit of work to restore the house back to it's original condition and put a lot of work into the decor as well. The house was nicely colored, using historical colors and looked really great. Then, they sold the house to the man we bought it from. He and, presumably, his wife then painted the entire house varying shades of brownish green. The only room with any other color was the upstairs bathroom and one wall in our bedroom. Little by little we have been changing the colors to suit my taste for more color. Our kitchen is now red, yellow and brown (sounds crazy, but I love it!) and this week, the girls' room is now a lot more cheery.

The girls were going to be gone for a few days visiting Grandma and Grandpa. We don't live close enough for an easy "day at Grandma and Grandpa's house" so they went down for a few days to stay and I got busy working like a madwoman. I had cleaned up the girls' room before they left, but once I dropped them off, I had to actually clean the room of dust and prep it for painting. Monday night I did that; taped the room and got two walls' trim work done. They have a baseboard, chair rail and a crown molding so lots to tape around. But, the previous owners had painted the wall between the baseboard and the chair rail to give it a faux wainscoting. I opted to do the same and I do like the way it turned out.

The first full day they were gone I finished painting the trim. This was a most of the day affair when you add in that first we had to go to speech, lay up supplies for the boys (ie fun foods for lunch and a couple of new, cheap toys to keep them busy while I was painting) and get more tape.

The next full day the girls were gone, I taped off the trim work and got the walls painted. Then, I put them room to rights and got the hankering to use up what was left of the trim paint in the boys' room. So, I moved the boys' beds to the girls' room (don't worry-they're only toddler beds and quite easy to move) and set them up there for the night. Then, I proceeded to trim out their room (after I had cleaned it and taped it). I nearly finished, but ran out of paint, so I had to be done for the evening. Too bad Home Depot doesn't stay open until midnight for those, "oh no! It's 10pm and I ran out of paint!" runs.

So, Thursday found me running to Home Depot early in the morning for a quart of paint and ....more tape. Oh, and some paint for their walls. ;)

Of course, being the crazy, I have to document everything with a billion pictures sort, I have pictures! And, here they are.

The girls' room-before shot. Ugly trim, white walls

Side shot-before

A very crooked shot-trim painted chocolate brown

The corner cupboard-brown now

And, the after shot

The closet-after

After-their walls are a very, very light blue-kind of an ice blue. I am quite fond of it.

The baby barracks. One of these days we're going to get them bunk beds. But, not right now.

I think that the next project might very well be the floors in the upstairs. They are peeling badly and really in need of a good sanding down and painting. We are looking into options for the kids' beds and when we figure out what we're going to do, then, we'll probably do the floors when we have the big bed move. (The girls' bunk beds will most likely go to the boys and we will get them a new set with 3 bunks as we are still hopeful of having another girl down the road.)
