K Art Class

I teach a Kindy art class at co-op these days. Last year it was a K Math. Now, it's art. The challenge becomes, how to keep them engaged without doing something totally lame or really above their heads. So, I turned to a book that has been residing, unused, on my shelf for quite some time. It's called Teaching Art With Books Kids Love. So, today we read Mirette On the Highwire and then talked about line in art and how it can help a picture tell more about the story than what is written in it. Then, I had the kids make pictures with lines of construction paper. I gave them each a sheet of paper and several stacks of construction paper cut into strips. They were to glue the strips in any way on to the paper. It was funny to listen to them talk while they worked. Honestly, they do great with it. They can really talk up a storm, but they are always working (not like my older kids in the 2nd/4th grades-they can't talk and work to save their lives). Here are the creations.

Grace and Isaiah, diligently working

Grace, Isaiah, and Nate. Note Isaiah's keen precision with the glue. He was masterful at putting those dots on just so. I was really impressed with his coordination.

Grace's-nearly finished. Since the only requirement was that the lines cover all the paper, some of them hung off the edges. We trimmed them up afterwards.

All trimmed and ready for her showing.
