Our First Unit Study-Lions

A unit study is basically choosing a topic to learn about, then proceeding to explore any and all avenues. Throughout this, you will learn much more than you expect and it's fun! So, our first unit study was on lions. We learned about Africa, the Maasai tribe who hunt lions, as well as the lions themselves and how they go about their daily tasks of sleeping, sleeping, sleeping and eating. The kids enjoyed it and I learned a few useless facts about lions as well. Then, at the end of it, the kids worked up some shields like those that the Maasai carry when they are out hunting lions. I had thought to have them make spears and have a lion hunt, but fortunately, sanity prevailed at the last minute and we did not do that. They did, however, wear the most adorable lion masks that they made and roared quite a bit.
