How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World
That was our FIAR title for the last two weeks. We talked about apples and things we can do with them, baked two apples pies (The kids did a lot to help, believe it or not!), and talked about the path that the girl in the story took to get all her ingredients for her apple pie. She starts out going to the market for her ingredients, but it's closed. So, the takes a ship to Italy for Semolina Wheat, then takes a train to France for a chicken (for the egg), gets to Sri Lanka any way she can (the illustrations show a bike, then a sailboat) for cinnamon, hitches a ride to England for a cow (milk for butter), stows away on a banana boat headed to Jamaica where she gets her sugar (and her salt from the seawater en route), starts to fly home, but needs apples so she is dropped into Vermont for apples, then takes a bus home to make her pie. While the pie is cooling, she calls her friends to come over and share it with her. And, you are reminded that apple pie is delicious topped with Vanilla Ice Cream (that you can get at the market) but if it happens to be closed-you can eat it plain! The kids got the biggest kick out of that. In fact, the other day, I was muttering to myself about wanting to make an apple pie for part of our projects, but I needed to go to the store for apples. Ruth looks over at me with a sly little grin and says "Better be sure the store's open!"
I found online where someone had made up cards for the story with a list of the places, ingredients and transportation that was used in the story. So, we read through the story and I had the girls move each card to a new stack as we read the location, ingredient or mode of transportation. Even David got into it for that part.
We also talked about phrases that use apple in them. "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away", "the apple of my eye", and "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" were the three I used. After we talked about them, they had to draw a picture showing what each one meant. Their pictures are so hilarious!
