Hot Air-The (Mostly) True Story of the First Hot Air Balloon Ride
By Marjorie Priceman
This may be, my new, absolute favorite picture book. The storyline is factual (or "mostly") and the illustrations are priceless. We spent the last few weeks of co-op reading the story each week and working on a lapbook to go along with it. We ended the co-op year with the constructing of a hot air balloon. It was quite ambitious, but I'm glad that we did it.

Cut out an 8" circle and a piece of wire (18 gauge or less) 24" long and form into a circle. Set aside for later.

Take two of the gores and lay one of top of the other, slightly off-you're going to put glue on the top one and fold the bottom one up and over on to the top one. Repeat with the remaining 6 alternating sides like an accordion.

Paste circle on to top of the balloon to cover the joining of the gores and cover any gaps there might be.

Ready to lift off -we used a heat gun for our source of heat. Perhaps later on we'll try an on-board source of heat.
