First Day Home

Today was a whirlwind of activity. I spent the morning trying to catch up on laundry and tidy the house.  We left in such a hurry that it looked like a hurricane came through.  Meals were carefully planned and executed and I even managed to give two rounds of meds without tears.  (Ruth's, that is.  I'm hardened.)  I must be getting better.

After lunch, Baby Cakes and I headed off to fill prescriptions for Ruth while Chris took the rest of the kids to the park for some bike riding.  We're just trying to keep things as normal as possible while we learn all the ins and outs of this disease.  I had made a list of things that Ruth definitely liked and I planned to buy then for meal and snacks.  Her daily schedule, right now, calls for a strict monitoring of her carb intake so I am trying really hard to stick to it.  Having these fun, prepackaged treats makes it just a tad bit easier on me.

So, what is her daily schedule?  We're sticking to the hospital schedule for now and until we go for our followup visit on Monday.  Breakfast, 8:30am 60 carbs, lunch 12:30 and 60 carbs, snack 3pm and 15 carbs with protein, dinner at 5:30 with 60 carbs, snack 8:30 with 15 carbs and some protein.  She receives a shot of insulin with each meal and another one at bedtime that works through the night and the next day.  I must also check her blood sugar at 2am each day until her appointment on Monday.  That part kinda stinks.  But, at least it's only until Monday.

Ruth has been a real trooper.  I'm about to keel over in exhaustion but she, good girl, is requesting that we go to our Wednesday night class at meeting.  I'd rather sleep right now, but how can I deny that request?
